How to Properly Install Sump Pumps to Avoid Flooding

Flood remediation pumps are invaluable property assets. Installed in a below ground-level basement, a sump pump collects and discharges groundwater and plumbing leaks before the fluid can cause damage to wood and concrete. If there are irreplaceable boxes full of family heirlooms down there, too, the water won't reach them, not if the pump is working properly. However, a pump installer can't do his job until the light construction work is finished.

Constructing a Sump Pump Basin

Light construction services are used to carry out this stage of the work. At least 80 cm deep and 60 cm square, the below basement-level basin is added to the floor. Remember, there's no point adding this feature if it's not situated at the lowest point in that flat surface. Some seasoned contractors release a controlled stream of water as a means of locating the ideal basin spot. The water flows across floor contours until it reaches the lowest point. A plumbers level and a trained eye, plus that bucket of water, should be enough to get the work started. From here, a single man can dig out the basin and line it with quick-dry concrete.

Faced With the Two-Option Pump Installation Phase

During the early stage of the work, a decision is made to install a plinth-mounted electric sump pump. Of some importance here, the housing doesn't require massive amounts of waterproofing, but it does need to feature a few discharge-strengthened pumping attributes. For one thing, with the pump located above the water, it'll require a minimum "head" of 4.6 metres. Added to its self-priming capabilities, the appliance can effortlessly draw up water into its basin-situated pipe when it features this much suction head. There's also a second option, the installation of a submersible pump. Sunk below the accumulating water, the device requires a high Ingress Protection (IP) rating, but it doesn't necessarily need a powerful suction mechanism. Installed on a chain or a special rail, submersibles rise to the surface when they need maintenance or repair work done.

It's a moderately difficult task, the installation of a sump pump. An experienced DIY-er might accept the challenge, but the job is really best left in the hands of a professional pump contractor. There's the light construction work to do, the PVC pipes and pump electrics to route, too. An independent circuit should be reserved for the device, for it's a power-hungry piece of equipment, one that's surrounded in sump water. Finally, there's the float switch and discharge pipes to configure. The float must trigger when the basin fills to a predetermined level, and that discharge pipe must safely route the drained water out of the lowest-point room and far from the property.
